When Johann was about 32 years old, he immigrated to the US
aboard the ship Henrietta which landed at the port of Philadelphia, Pa on
22Oct1754. Upon arrival in Philadelphia, many of the passengers were "ill of
fevers" and all were held under quarentine some days upon the ship. During the
hazardous trip across the Atlantic, Johann's name was corrupted into several
different spellings such as "Philip Gross" and "Philipus Gruss". He adopted the
spelling "Cruse" in his lifetime so that his new neighbors would at least
pronounce the name correctly.
Sometime between late 1764 and 1769, Johann moved from Pa to Rowan County,
NC. He is listed as one of the councilmen or elders of Organ Lutheran Church in
Salisbury. He physically assisted in the building of the new stone church.
Johann served during the Revolutionary War. He was a guard at the Salisbury
District Gaol. |
