1. Henry DILLEN (b.Ireland) married Mary [mnu]. Children: John [see #2],
George(b.1807 Ireland-d.11/24/1882 Pa), Abbie, Betsy.
Henry and his wife immigrated to the US form Ireland in 1804.
The sailing vessel they were aboard was caught in a storm and blown off course.
It lost its masts and was so badly disabled that it drifted about for 3 months.
In the meantime, the food supply was exhausted and lots were cast as to who
should be killed to satisfy the hunger of the passengers; but the next morning
New York Harbor was sighted and all aboard were saved.
The family remained for a short time in New York, then they moved to
Philadelphia, Pa and then to Philipsburg, Pa. Henry established his house in
Becaria Twsp, having purchased 260 acres of land, which he cleared and developed
into a prosperous farm.
Henry was drafted to fight in the War of 1812. |

2. John DILLEN (b.1797 Ireland-d.2/1861) married Hannah PATTERSON
(b.3/30/1799 Ireland-d.11/15/1860). Children: Mary Elizabeth
(b.8/4/1823-d.4/19/1845), Jane (b.9/21/1826-d.1848), Elizabeth (b.10/4/1828),
Rebecca (b.7/14/1829), Margaret (b.7/14/1829-d.3/1862), Rebecca
(b.4/25/1832-d.6/1894), George (b.9/3/1834-d.10/30/1860), Sarah
(b.2/11/1837-d.4/30/1860), John [see #3]).
John was 7 when his parents came to the US. He aided in the
work of developing and improving his father's farm.
John lived in a log cabin situated on his father's farm for a number of
years, during which time he cleared 125 acres of land. In 1856, he erected a
fine 2-story frame residence and a large barn, said to be one of the best in the
county. |

3. John DILLEN (b.12/31/1849 Pa-12/4/1906 Pa) married Ellen E BRANIFF
(b.8/21/1842 Pa-d.9/13/1918 Pa). Children: George B (b.10/25/1866-d.2/9/1867),
Sarah A (b.12/7/1867), Martha L (b.1/13/1870), John C (b.10/4/1871), Francis B
(b.2/6/1873-d.5/16/1874), Hannah Rebecca [see #4], Ashley (b.12/14/1876), Ellis
(b.9/25/1877), Harvy (b.6/4/1879), Catherine June (b.6/2/1882 Pa-d.5/23/1959
Pa), Claude (b.4/17/1885).
John was a well-known lumberman and farmer in Becaria Twsp,
Pa. A description of John is provided from the Civil War muster rolls. He was
5'9" and weighed 140lbs. He had light hair and blue eyes.
On 19Sep1861, he enlisted in Co D, 53rd Pa Vol Inf. The enlistment was for
"the war years".
In Jun1863, this unit marched to Gettysburg, Pa and participated in the
ever-memorable battle at that point. During the second day of the fight
(02Jul1863), John was wounded in the left leg just above the knee by a minie
ball. Of 15 men in his company, 11 were wounded. Of 153 men in the regiment,
only 22 were present for duty after the engagement.[ John's name appears on the
Pennsylvania Memorial at Gettysburg National Battlefield]
John was taken to University Hospital in Baltimore, Md where his wound was
opened afresh and he almost lost his life on account of the bleeding. Even after
healing, his left leg was 1" shorter than his right. John returned to a limited
duty with the 162nd Co, 2nd Btn, Veteran Reserve Corps until the end of his
enlistment.
John was a Jeffersonian Democrat. He held the office of School Director for
6 years. He was the Assessor for 2 terms and Overseer of the Poor for 3 terms.
He was as true to his duties of citizenship in times of peace as when he
followed the flag as a defender of the Union.
