2. William PHARES (d.1/1805) married [1st] Sarah SHEARER. Children [1st
marriage]: William Jr [see #3], John (b.10/23/1774), Samuel (b.2/21/1777), James Isham (b.2/15/1780 Tn-d.12/1857 Tn), Absalom (b.12/25/1783 NC-d.10/24/1805 Ky).
William PHARES married [2nd] Catherine JOHNSON. Children [2nd marriage]: Nathan
(b.1794 Ky), Reuben (b.2/18/1797 Tn-d.1840 Tn), Hiram, Elizabeth (b.11/18/1798),
Nancy.
William, called Old Man William by his relatives and
neighbors, was an early settler and land owner on Martins Creek in Jackson
County, Tn. He contracted for 1600 acres including the mouth of Martins Creek in
1801, payment to be in horses.
By examining William's will, it appears that he was a very prosperous man.
He owned a large plantation at the time of his death, which he left to his wife
and the five children still living at home. Besides the homeplace, he left them
400 acres of land as well as "all the house furniture, all my sheep, all my
hogs, twelve milch cows and calves, three mares and two colts and Negro woman
named Hannah, and Negro boy named Dave, all my working tools". He left to his
five oldest children two slaves, two horses, and all cattle over what was left
to his wife and other children. |

3. William PHARES, Jr (b.10/26/1772 NC-d.2/1810 Tn) married Delilah EMBRY.
Children: William III (b.Ky-d.2/25/1836 Tn), John (b.1802 Ky), James [see #4],
Jane.
William and his family lived on 400 acres of property which
he purchased from his father.
By reading William's will, it can be seen that he was a religious man. He
wrote the following, displaying his great faith: "...give and recommend my soul
into the hands of the Almighty God...". After outlining the deposition of his
body he wrote "without doubting that at the general resurrection I shall receive
the same [body] again by the mighty power of God". |

4. James PHARRIS (b.1/4/1804 Tn-d.3/29/1885 Tn) married [1st] Martha VINSON.

Tn), Martha (b.1848 Tn), James Jr (b.1852 Tn). James PHARRIS married [3rd] Sarah
Jane POSTON. Children [3rd marriage]: Andrew Jackson [see #5], Joseph (b.1860 Tn),
Tennessee (b.1862 Tn-d.1931), Thomas Jefferson (b.1864 Tn-d.Or), Sebrom (b.1866
Tn-d.Tn). James PHARRIS married [4th] Mary A Elizabeth GOAD. Children [4th
marriage]: Alexander (b.1870 Tn), Mary Jane (b.Tn), Armanella (b.10/4/1872
Tn-d.11/19/1951 Tn), Emily (b.1873).
James changed the surname spelling to "Pharris" during his
lifetime. He was commissioned a 1stLt in the Militia of Tennessee on 22Nov1824.
James is buried in the family cemetery behind his house. The gravesites are
marked by ungraven fieldstones. Family tradition has it that he is buried
surrounded by all of his wives.
The Pharris home has been in this family for over 200 years. |
