3. Matthew Dow SUTTON (b.3/31/1881 Tn-d.3/31/1951) married Sarah Jane PHARRIS (b.1/20/1889 Tn-d.1/12/1973). Children: Lyda Jane [see #4], Minnie Malissia (b.9/9/1911 Tn-d.2/3/2002 Wa), Charles Dow (b.2/6/1914 Tn-d.3/31/1977), Helen Maurine (b.3/21/1916-d.11/11/1972 Tn).
Matthew lived on a 115 acre farm on the left descending bank of the Cumberland River (approx. river mile 332.5) in Jackson County, Tn. This land was deeded to Matthew by his father on 17Aug1909. Sarah lived on this farm for 54 years.
The property and home were taken over by the government because of the Cordell Hull Dam and Reservoir Project. The agreement to sell the land and outbuildings was signed on 09Sep1965.
Even after moving, Sarah couldn't live in peace. Her new property was threatened in 1967. The highway department surveyed the land up to the front of the house. They wanted a strip of land to build a road connecting with the North-South Freeway. The plans called for the new road to be built less than 400 feet in front of the house. Fortunately, these plans were never carried out.
Sarah was a member of the Methodist church. She was also know as a lover of animals and nature.
