Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is lovely, whatever is
admirable - if anything is excellent or praiseworthy - think about such things. -- Philippians 4:8

punishment to a coerced action. Without free will, God would be playing a very terrible and unloving game with his most prized creations.
Even without the cited Biblical passages showing man is a free will agent, it must be seen that man is free to make choices. This proof would come from the fact that God can't contradict himself. God is good, so he can't cause evil. According to people who deny free will, God has preordained our every action. If this is the case, we can extrapolate that if a husband kills his wife, then God preordained, or forced, him to do it. Killing is a sin, God can't sin, so God couldn't have preordained the killing. This said, it must be accepted that the husband had free will to make the decision to kill his wife.
Man has the freedom to make his own choices. Without the ability to make the choices, if God preordained us to do whatever we do, than God would be the author of evil. Agreeing with the doctrine of predestination in a case as above is a great heresy. However, we can see that with God in our lives and following the lead of the Holy Spirit, we'll use our free will to make the right choices.
