Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is lovely, whatever is
admirable - if anything is excellent or praiseworthy - think about such things. -- Philippians 4:8

He Never Lost His Faith

I write this as witness to the strong faith of a man - Mr. Dever. Sorry, I should say Gilbert, for that's what he always wanted me to call him (I didn't, thought Mr. Dever more respectful). He was a good and loving husband, father, granddad, and friend.
This man I knew as a friend even though I didn't spend a great deal of time with him. He spent many years working to support his family. He attended church, school functions when possible, and family gatherings. He was a strong man. It seemed that he could carry the weight of the world on his shoulders if he so chose.
Then, one day, he found out he had cancer. He took the news as we all would - with some fear and disbelief. He knew it would be a battle, but one for which he would put up a good fight. Fight he did! But, sadly, as time passed, he grew weaker and weaker - physically but not spiritually.
Many of us may have begun to doubt there was anyone above us - God, Jesus, or Holy Spirit. Did Gilbert? No! He never once asked "why me". He never doubted when life was over that he would be going to a much better place, that he would once again be a happy and healthy man. Is that faith? YES! Oh, what a testimony of faith!
I praise the Lord and give glory to God for touching this man so deeply.
Did God accept the life of this man? A touching picture: running from the woods and past the tombstone of this avid outdoorsman and hunter is the rut of a deer trail. A sign of the love of God for his child? I like to think so.
You'll be dearly missed Gilbert, my friend. I await the day we meet again.
