Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever
is noble, whatever is lovely, whatever is
admirable
- if anything is excellent or praiseworthy - think about such things. --
Philippians 4:8 |

THE PERFECT BOOK |
I go in search of the perfect book.
But then I think, is there such a thing?
Is there a book that can sweep me away
into a life that's not my own, but the same?
Even in a work of fiction
the events have to have the possibility of reality.
An historical account, one accurate and true,
or perhaps a biography would instead suffice.
The author must be able to keep my attention,
from the first word to the last period.
The plot of the story will carry me along
as if I were one of the characters.
I want to learn something from the words,
something that's worth remembering.
I want my emotions to be stirred,
to experience the highs, the lows.
I want to understand what's happening
and, by that, to learn about myself.
I want to live life through others,
imagine myself in their situations.
Is it possible for an author, any author,
to describe the settings so perfectly
that I can really see it without being there;
to be able to hear the voices, see the faces?
Can I lose myself in another place, another time;
see the landscapes and the buildings?
Will I walk the same roads, the same trails;
feel the happiness and joys,
the pains and agonies?
I stand staring at many books,
a colorful rainbow aligned on shelves.
Where do I begin my search, how long will it take?
Search as I might, I walk away empty handed.
At home again, I spy a book lying on a table.
I pick it up and thumb through pages,
glancing randomly at scattered paragraphs.
How could I have overlooked this book?
It appears to be a history,
a very long, well-developed one at that.
There's intrigue, war, and family genealogy.
As I read, I can actually experience the events.
Oh, what a wonderful book!
It's all I could've ever wanted bound in one volume.
I'm learning, I'm being inspired,
I'm moved beyond what words can express.
When I left home this morning I never imagined,
the book for which I searched I already owned.
I didn't know what the title would be, but now I know.
The Bible - the perfect book. |
